Alma New Brunswick: Where the Food and the Tides are Equally Amazing!

Alma New Brunswick quick facts:
  • Main industry: tourism
  • Population of 300 people
  • Languages spoken: mostly English
  • Accommodations (near by): Camping, Cottages, Hotel/Motel, B&B

Alma New Brunswick is a small community located on the outskirts of Fundy National Park. Tourism is the backbone of the local economy along with the fishing of lobster and scallops. There’s nothing like fresh New Brunswick seafood!

There are unique shops to explore, excellent seafood restaurants, and take-outs. Butlands Seafood will pack your favorite seafood for travel so you can cook it the way you like it when you get to your destination or campground. You can also buy it already cooked if that is what you prefer.

Alma is also home to Kelly’s Bakery, famous for their sticky (cinnamon) buns, and soon to be famous for all the homemade goodies that they bake fresh everyday. Things such as pies, pastries, bread, soup and sandwiches. This is a must stop! Oh the gooey sweet stickiness… my mouth is watering already.

It is not uncommon to see large tour buses parked along the side of the main road at Kelly’s Bakery (It is becoming an actual scheduled stop for many tours). Taste test for yourself and you will agree…they are just like what Grandma used to make…maybe even better?

When you arrive in Alma New Brunswick take notice of the various boats at the docks. Alma is located right on the Bay of Fundy where the Upper Salmon River empties into the Bay Of Fundy and the Highest Tides in The World work their magic constantly, seeming almost oblivious to the locals. The Tide Schedule will tell you when it is high and low for each day. Yes, it is at different times every day!

If you stay any length of time at all, you will probably see the boats floating in water and then you will see them appear to be sitting on dry land. So have your camera ready because this is quite amazing to see. Although I’ve seen it many times because I lived near there, it still fascinates me to see the power of the tides.

From Alma New Brunswick you can stroll along the wharf or walk the ocean floor at low tide in search of a fossil, or a one-of-a-kind treasure. The tides are sure to bring in something new each time. We always find something interesting every time we explore along the Fundy coast.

It is so relaxing to just lose yourself in the art of beach combing since the tides are constantly arriving with new treasures to be found daily.

It is never too hot when you are near the Bay of Fundy. Air-conditioned by the Fundy breeze, even the hottest days of the summer are quite comfortable on the Fundy coast.

Don’t expect to go swimming either; besides being unsafe due to the constant tidal changes, this water is very cold even on the hottest days of the summer. The beach is covered with large rocks and the many are coated with tiny barnacles. For me that means no bare feet… my tender tootsies can’t handle that.

However, if your heart is set on taking a swim, Fundy National Park is located right beside Alma New Brunswick. The park has a nice warm heated salt-water pool, much safer for swimming.

Speaking of Fundy National Park, Alma is a handy place to pick up last minute groceries, some marshmallows for the evening campfire, or a piece of camping gear you might have forgotten – for your hikes on the various trails in Fundy National Park.

Remember though, Alma New Brunswick is a small town, so don’t go in expecting to buy everything you need for your first time camping excursion. You may very well find everything you need, but like all small towns, you will pay a higher price for it.
