The Anchorage Provincial Park: Close to all the Attractions and Nature on Grand Manan Island

The Anchorage Provincial Park is located on an Island called Grand Manan an hour and a half by ferry off the Fundy Coast of New Brunswick. It is one of nine parks owned and operated by the province. This area is one of untouched natural beauty with many places to explore.

Beach beside Anchorage Provincial Park Campground at high tide There is a beach within walking distance of the campground where you can walk for miles, even farther when the tide is out! There are walking and biking trails leading from the campground to the beach and along marshlands where many species of birds frequent.

We camped at this Provincial Park in mid August and escaped the heat of the mainland. It is quite a temperature drop when you are that close to the Bay of Fundy!

Directions:

From mainland New Brunswick take Route 1, Exit 60 at Blacks Harbour. From there follow your signs to take the ferry to Grand Manan Island. In Grand Manan follow Route 776 south for approximately 24 km. Watch for your signs for The Anchorage Provincial Park.

Facilities:

It is a fairly small campground with 100 campsites. Full service, semi-serviced and un-serviced sites are available. Most of the un-serviced sites are nicely wooded and private but the electrical sites (semi-serviced and full-service) are more in an open field. They have very clean washrooms/showers and coin operated laundry facilities.

Anchorage Provincial Park Campground Kitchen shelters, playground and hiking trails make this park a family friendly place to spend a few days. To top it all off the staff are amazing and took the time to answer any questions we had, and went out of their way to make our stay more comfortable. The staff allowed us to re-freeze our icepacks for our cooler in their freezer overnight. They also loaned us some frozen bottled water to use until our ice packs were ready.

As with most Provincial Parks the Anchorage Provincial park also offer a few tent cabins at a very reasonable price for those people who want the tenting experience without actually sleeping on the ground or getting wet if it rains. The tent cabins are just a shell of a cabin that occupy one of the tent sites that contain no washroom facilities (You use the facilities just like the other campers in the park.) but they do have power and there are wooden bed frames inside to put your air mattress and sleeping bag on. It is a great idea if you have friends or family who would like to tent with you but they don’t have a camper. They can rent a tent cabin and you can get a site near them in the same park.

The tent cabins at The Anchorage Provincial Park were located in two different places. There were a couple near the beach at the lower end of the park and a couple up behind the office away from the water and isolated a bit from the park.

The tides are dramatic in this part of the province but not to the extreme. The tide doesn’t need to be out to enjoy the beach at the Anchorage Provincial park but if it is, there is much more beach to explore. Check the Tide Schedule before you plan your day. Don’t forget to get a picture of both high and low tide. It is really amazing to see the dramatic effects of the tides.

There are many beautiful walking/biking trails near the campground and all over the Island of Grand Manan to explore. Many people were on bikes at this campground.

Water view from Swallow Tail Light House in Grand Manan Nature is the top attraction here with rugged coastline, lighthouses, tides, birding, beachcombing and kayaking topping the list of things to do. We topped off our trip with an incredible whale watching tour by Sea Watch Tours. They guarantee that you see whales!! Not just Minke Whales either! We saw Humpback, Finback, and the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale. We also saw a few different species of birds including a puffin.

Travel Tips:

You cannot book the ferry going to Grand Manan but you can book it leaving the Island.

Check the Grand Manan Ferry Schedule to determine your best time to visit.
