City of Edmundston New Brunswick Quick Facts:

  • Population of 17,000 people
  • Mostly French speaking
  • Accommodations: camping, hotels/motels, B&Bs
  • Industry: forestry, plastics and sign making.

Edmundston New Brunswick is the first city you come to if entering the province from Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec or Madawaska, Maine USA. Edmundston has the highest ratio of French speaking people in the province.

De la Republique Provincial Park is located near Edmundston. Being a provincial park it has kept the natural woodland setting that is customary to all our provincial parks. Along with great camping, it has all kinds of walking, hiking and biking trails, two tennis courts, a large beautiful heated swimming pool, playground, horseshoe pits, picnic sites, laundry facilities and canteen. Oh, and they also have a boat ramp!

That’s not all!

Within walking distance of de la Republique Provincial Park are the The New Brunswick Botanical Gardens. This is the largest arboretum east of Montreal with 80,000 plants. There are many mosaic cultures and themed gardens making this is a plant lovers dream. Mosaic cultures are 2D or 3D plant sculptures that form images using plants of various color and texture to achieve the desired effect. This one has a Native theme.

In the early spring the gardens have very large butterflies that emerge from their cocoons in a room designed just for them that is nice and warm. These butterflies are not native to New Brunswick but are brought in from the south. They are very friendly little creatures and they like to land on anything they might find colorful. They are so elegant when they fly and they have such pretty colors. I found it very relaxing to just sit there and let them fly around me. They are beautiful!

The Antique Automobile Museum is located on the same grounds as the Provincial Park near Edmundston.

It is not a very large facility, and even though I am not a big fan of old cars, I found it very interesting to see some of the first automobiles and how they were made. You’ll even find a tractor, a fire truck, and some carriages. This particular one is a 1916 Model T Ford.

Edmundston New Brunswick has an 18-hole championship golf course called the Fraser Edmundston course. Included is a bar and restaurant, pro shop, and driving range.

La Foire Brayonne is a French themed festival that takes place each year to celebrate the heritage and culture of the Brayon people. Ask the locals about the ploye and taste this culinary tradition for yourself. A ploye is basically a really thin buckwheat pancake but it is really good when it is covered in butter and dipped in molasses or maple syrup.

For winter fans the ski hill at Mont Farlagne in Edmundston is a popular attraction. Not into skiing? Check out the Tube Races… they’re always a popular event each year.

All in all Edmundston New Brunswick is a great place to stop and literally smell the roses.
