When is the First Day of Winter and What Does it Mean?
The first day of winter season in the northern hemisphere, also known as winter solstice is always either December 21st or 22nd. It is the day with the shortest amount of daylight and the longest amount of darkness. In the southern hemisphere the winter solstice is the day with the longest amount of daylight and the shortest amount of darkness. This would be the start of summer in the southern hemisphere. Winter in the southern hemisphere starts June 20th or 22nd. Since this was discovered in the northern hemisphere it corresponds with the seasons in the northern hemisphere.
