Gagetown New Brunswick …as a tourism counselor I’ve been asked many times about Gagetown, and the first thing I like to do is confirm that we are referring to the same place. There is more than one Gagetown in New Brunswick, you see. First, there is the Village Of Gagetown, and then there is CFB Gagetown, a military base.
The Village of Gagetown is located 50km south east of Fredericton. It has been named “One of the ten prettiest towns in Canada” by Harrowsmith Country Life magazine – it lives up to its name. There are a uniquely high number of artisans and shops along the waterfront and the people are extremely friendly. There is a campground nearby, B&Bs (Bed & Breakfast), a local store, a marina, and a couple of small restaurants.
The Village of Gagetown is the Birthplace of Samuel Leonard Tilley, one of the Fathers of Confederation. Stop by and visit Tilley House, which is a National Historic Site of Canada.
This is a great place for Birdwatchers since it is a village built along the lower side of the famous Saint John River. Check out the beautiful pottery of Flo Greig and get a studio tour or relax in the slow paced atmosphere of the village itself by trying out one of the local restaurants along Front Street.
The brick building on the right is one of the local restaurants called The Old Boot Pub. We stopped in to sample their food after the Queens County Fair. I am happy to announce that the food was really good and the service was great! Our waiter also had a good sense of humor...which always helps.
The Gagetown Fair, also known as the Queens County Fair, was a great way to spend the afternoon. There were rides for the young ones and live music
for the not so young with ample seating to accommodate tired legs from walking around and viewing all the various exhibits. I liked all the colors of the various food items that were displayed in the exhibits from local farmers.
If you are visiting Gagetown New Brunswick for the day then why not spend the night at one of the Villages B&B’s. All the little shops and restaurants are within walking distance from the B&B's. The local campground Gagetown Camping…is just a short distance down the road and it has a heated swimming pool!
Gagetown Cider Company is a great place to spend the afternoon with the family. Located just below the Village of Gagetown New Brunswick on Route 102, let the “Apple Man”, Blair Sterling show you around the orchards or take a taste test of the ciders and wines made from 100% real fruit.
This is a family farm operation and they love to show people what they do. They even have a gift shop full of unique gifts like local artwork, pottery, and books. I was amazed to see what they do there.
Quick tip: Out of courtesy, be sure to call ahead to schedule your tour.

I decided to stop in one time unannounced. It was my first time to see the Cider Company. It was a cool day in May and Mr. Sterling was up on a ladder painting a part of the building that houses the gift shop and he stopped what he was doing, came down from the ladder and showed me around.
It is so pretty in the spring when the apple orchards are in full bloom (can’t you just smell the blossoms now) and in late summer when the tree branches are heavily loaded with shiny red apples that are so heavy it is amazing the branch doesn’t break. Gagetown Cider Company is accessible by land, and river if you so choose…
The Village of Gagetown New Brunswick is a great little place to stop and have a rest on your way to Saint John, Moncton, or Fredericton – depending on where you’re coming from. The Campground is only minutes from the 4-lane highway.

There are two museums on site: The CFB Gagetown Military Museum and the Canadian Military Engineers Museum are open all year long and are free of charge. Each has their own unique set of artifacts and both have staff willing to assist you with any questions.
Each year, as part of Canada Day Celebrations, CFB Gagetown soldiers, vehicles, and aircraft arrive in Fredericton to show off their stuff. It’s a great time to experience some of what the Canadian Army is all about.
We may not be a world super power, but we are proud of what our military men and women do for our country!
