Grand Falls New Brunswick is a large town south of Edmundston New Brunswick built around the Saint John River.

The Grand Falls Gorge is the primary tourist attraction, but it has a double purpose since it is also a hydroelectric dam.

Don't be fooled into thinking this water is a pretty blue color as it is displayed in some publications. It is quite brownish or muddy looking on the best of days.

I highly recommend a guided tour of the Grand Falls Gorge to learn about the legend of a tribe being saved by the quick thinking of a native girl who used the falls to her advantage…

Inside the tourist information center is a model to scale showing the gorge and the surrounding area. I found it quite interresting to view prior to walking the various trails. To me it was similar to the veiw you would see from an airplane.

If you get a chance, take the mile long pontoon-boat through the gorge too. This is an interresting boat ride but it comes with a price.

Late spring and early summer is generally the best time to see lots of water coming through the falls. The falls have been disappointing to some people in off season, (like late summer) because there are times when very little water flows over the falls due to the generating station that takes it to produce electricity for the town.

If you are looking for a room with a view of the Falls check out the Hilltop Motel. What a view they have! Not every room has the view but be sure to ask for one. Also, book early… this place fills up very quickly! You have to check out the restaurant at the Hilltop Motel they have some amazing food - and ask for the dining room with the view!

Grand Falls is home to the widest street east of Winnipeg. Broadway Boulevard is 144 feet wide and is lined with all kinds of unique stores that women love to explore. The town also does a great job of prettying things up with flowers and benches along the way so the men can have a little snooze while the ladies find their treasures.

It is easy to spend a few days in this beautiful town exploring the various trails around the Gorge, taking the pontoon boat ride, and shopping the local stores, golfing, and just plain relaxing.

Travel Tips:

There is room for large RV's and motor homes to park at the tourist information center. The trails are free to explore on your own if you so choose. The guided tour and the pontoon boat ride will cost you. Both the Grand Falls Gorge and Broadway Boulevard are within walking distance of the information center.

Grand Falls New Brunswick also has a marina, a farmers market, cinemas, and a bowling alley; all the comforts of a city in a country setting.
