Herring Cove Provincial Park: Nature and Relaxation For All Ages

Herring Cove Provincial Park located on Campobello Island in the Bay of Fundy between St. Andrews and Saint John along the Fundy Coastal Drive. It is just two short ferry rides from the New Brunswick mainland at St. George New Brunswick. The first ferry takes you to Deer Island and the second ferry will get you to Campobello Island where Herring Cove is located. It is one of nine parks owned and operated by the province of New Brunswick.

Directions:

From the state of Maine USA follow route 1 until you reach Whiting Corner. From there take route 189 to Lubec. Cross the bridge and take route 774 on Campobello Island and follow signs for Herring Cove Provincial Park

From New Brunswick driving east or west on highway #1, take exit #56 (St. George) and follow the signage for Route 172 to Letete. From there you will need to take the Deer Island Ferry. This ferry is completely free of charge. Once you arrive in Deer Island you need to follow route 772 to the other end of the Island where you will line up along the appropriate side of the road for the Campobello Island Ferry. (The other ferry goes to Lubec Maine, USA). This ferry you will need to pay a moderate fee for. They accept cash or cheque only!!! Once you reach Campobello Island take a right off the ferry following Route 774 south to Herring Cove Provincial Park. The park entrance is on the right.

Facilities:

There are 88 campsites – some wooded, some in an open field near the playground, and some with a view of the water. There are pull-through sites available for the larger RV’s. Sites 1 through 40 have electrical hook-up. Individual sites have fire pits and when we stayed there, the washrooms were clean and modern. The washrooms are wheelchair accessible and pets are welcome. There is a washer and dryer onsite for all your laundry needs and a dumping station for those that require it.

This Park has some nice recreation facilities that include a playground, a common area, a kitchen shelter, a mushroom water sprinkler, and volleyball and badminton nets. At Herring Cove Provincial Park there is a mile long beach and many hiking trails to explore.

Beach hounding and sand castle building are popular at this park since it is right on the Bay of Fundy. The abundant wildlife include various species of birds such as osprey, eagles, and blue heron along with deer, moose, beaver, and rabbit, sea urchins and sand dollars.

The beautiful Golf Course at Herring Cove can be seen as you drive along the road to the park entrance. At one point it overlooks the mile long beach. This is a scenic 9-hole course fully equipped with golf carts, putting green, proshop, club rental, driving range, and clubhouse with a licensed restaurant. Herring Cove Provincial Park has four tent cabins at a very reasonable price for those people who want the tenting experience without actually sleeping on the ground or getting wet if it rains. The tent cabins are just a shell of a cabin that occupy one of the tent sites that contain no washroom facilities (You use the facilities just like the other campers in the park.) but they do have power and there are wooden bed frames inside to put your air mattress and sleeping bag on. It is a great idea if you have friends or family who would like to tent with you but they don’t have a camper. They can rent a tent cabin and you can get a site near them in the same park.

The tent cabins at Herring Cove have a beautiful view of the mile long beach and there is a playground for kids nearby also.

While we were visiting the mile-long-beach there were artists painting the landscape.

Winter Activities:

Herring Cove Provincial Park is closed in the winter months.

Travel Tips:

Herring Cove Provincial Park is a very quiet park where you can relax and enjoy nature with the entire family. There is no hustle and bustle around this park it is all about peace and quiet and relaxation. You won’t find a shopping mall or anything of the sorts near by. For that matter, you won’t even find a service/gas station on the Island. Better fuel up before you leave St. George. There is however a grocery store (with an ATM), and a few gift shops, cabins to rent, and the odd take-out, the bare necessities. This makes it even easier to relax and enjoy.
