Miramichi New Brunswick is World Famous for their Salmon Fishing on The Mighty Miramichi River.

Get all the information you need about fishing salmon in New Brunswick from Natural Resources at: http://www.gnb.ca/0254/index-e.asp Remember to click on “non-resident” button if you are not from here since the laws are different for resident and non resident. If you are not from New Brunswick and you want to fish salmon you need a guide, because only residents can fish in the Crown Reserve Waters.

There have been some famous people fish the Miramichi, one of which was Charles, Prince of Whales.

Keep in mind too that some guides (outfitters) have the cost of the license included in their price. Some guides are also able to provide that license at their facility and others require you to go and pick it up yourself at the local Department of Natural Resources.

There are two outfitters that have the necessary licenses at their facility. They are Upper Oxbow Outdoor Adventures in Sillikers (near Miramichi) and Country Haven Lodge and Cottages in Gray Rapids (south of Miramichi City near Blackville).

I have not been to Upper Oxbow but I have been to Country Haven. As soon as you start to talk to Byron Coughlan you will start to relax and know that you have made a great choice. I generally stop there every year to see how he is doing with the intent to stay only a few minutes and 2hours later I am still listening to him speak of what he loves to do - salmon fishing.

Country Haven Packages include meals, lodging, pick-up service at the airport, all necessary equipment and license, and a lovely alternative for the ladies traveling with their husbands and don’t want to fish. You can stay in the main lodge or you can have the privacy of your very own full service cabin on the water.

Another great place for a family to enjoy a fishing / canoe / tubing adventure is at O’Donnells Cottages and Expeditions. Valerie O’Donnell is another person that I visit each year and she is so friendly and accommodating. You can rent a full service cottage for a day or a week and fish, hike, bike, canoe, kayak, snow mobile, snow shoe, cross country ski, or slide on your crazy carpet.

Many different packages exist for each season. There is even a hiking excursion to Falls Brook Falls, which is the highest waterfall in the Province of New Brunswick at almost 100 feet high.

If you are not into fishing then experience the Miramichi River in Miramichi New Brunswick by taking one of their guided sightseeing boat tours. From Ritchie Warf check out the theme park explaining the rich ship building & forestry industries that have shaped this city over the years.

Interested in the people and their culture? Take in a genuine old-time kitchen party and bring your own instrument to join in. Meet Bill Mullin a true Miramichier who loves country music and people. He has converted his truck garage into a Country Music Oprey Miramichi style. Crowds of people join Bill and his band on Saturday nights for a little boogey-woogey two-steppin’. On Wednesday nights bring your own instrument and play along. Sometimes his surprise guests can be of the legendary type.

Attractions South West of Miramichi New Brunswick on Route 8:

The Atlantic Salmon Museum in Doaktown has everything you ever wanted to know about the Atlantic salmon and the preservation of this species.

Check out the Priceville Suspension Bridge in McNamee for fun – unless you have a fear of heights. We went on it for fun one windy day and it was a blast. It was literally swinging in the wind.

In the Central New Brunswick Woodsmen’s Museum in Boiestown learn of the Dungarvin Whooper, folklore of a lumber camp. This 15-acre facility takes you back in time when the first settlers made their living as woodsmen.

Metepenagiag Heritage Park in Red Bank is an insight into the Native Metepenagiag First Nations people and their traditions and crafts.

Winter seems to be the longest season in the Maritimes and the Miramichi is no different. Miramichi New Brunswick receives above average snowfall, so wintertime fun is a given.(if you can't beat it - join it?) In winter you can enjoy 600km of groomed snow mobile trails with accommodations, restaurants, gas stations, and repair services for your convenience along the way. Many value packages are available at a discounted rate from local hotels/motels.

Cross Country skiing is another popular activity in the winter months. The Miramichi has 25 km of lighted ski trails for your convenience, public skating, hockey, curling and sleigh rides.

Whether you’re looking to travel in summer, fall, winter, or spring, there’s always something to do and fun to be had in Miramichi New Brunswick.
